Faculty Application: Statement of Justification

This statement is to enable the DAC to better understand the proposals in faculty applications. It is also known as a statement of significance and need.

This statement allows the DAC and the applicant to consider the proposals in the context of the importance of the building and why the proposal is necessary. It should be provided if required by the DAC and will generally be appropriate for more significant proposals.

  1. Put into context the importance of that part of the church or feature to be removed or altered; consider rarity, historic or artistic value, liturgical significance, contribution to architectural character etc
  2. Set out the reasons for the proposed changes and, where appropriate, explain what has been done to address the issue in other ways, before proposing the removal or alteration of fabric or fixtures.
  3. Explain what alternatives have been considered and what steps have been taken to minimise any damage to the historic fabric and overall character of the church or feature.
  4. Explain how the character of the church or feature is enhanced by the proposals.
  5. Explain how the church or feature will be more accessible (in particular, for people with disabilities) by the proposals.
