Press Release
New Welsh bishops consecrated together
The Archbishop, the Bishop of St Davids and the Bishop of Bangor
Two Welsh bishops will be consecrated in a joint service next week.
The Bishops-Elect of St Davids Diocese and of Bangor Diocese will both be consecrated as Bishops at the service at Llandaff Cathedral on Saturday, November 29 at 2.30pm.
The Very Rev Wyn Evans, Dean of St Davids, will be consecrated as the 128th Bishop of St Davids while the Venerable Andrew John, Archdeacon of Cardigan, will be consecrated as the 81st Bishop of Bangor. Both were elected while serving in the Diocese of St Davids.
The bishops designate will be led into Llandaff Cathedral by a long procession of about 80 senior clerics and church legal officials. They will include the Archbishop of Wales and about a dozen other bishops. Also in the procession will be registrars, chancellors and archdeacons of the six Welsh dioceses, deans of the Welsh cathedrals and representatives from other Christian churches and Anglican provinces.
During the service, the bishops-designate will be consecrated by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, and a number of serving and retired bishops. The address will be given by the Rev Bob Fyffe, General Secretary of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.
The Consecration is a public service and reporters are welcome to attend. While filming is not permitted in the cathedral during the service, there will be opportunities for photographs and filming of the procession as it enters and leaves the west door of the cathedral. The procession will start at 2.20pm.
Following their consecrations, both bishops will be enthroned at their diocesan cathedrals. The new Bishop of St Davids will be enthroned at St Davids Cathedral on December 6 at 2.30pm while the new Bishop of Bangor will be enthroned at Bangor Cathedral on January 24, 2009, at 2.30pm.
