more information

social responsibility

Living in today’s society, with all our easy access to global information and problems, raises many issues for Christians and their way of life. The Division for Social Responsibility seeks to highlight and inform our Christian way of life in church and society, and to gain and circulate information and expertise to help us to live out our Christian commitment in our everyday lives.

The Division is chaired by Archdeacon Alun Hawkins, and the SR Officer is Rev. Canon Madalaine Brady. The members of the Division reflect various interest groups, including Christian Aid, Fairtrade, the Mothers’ Union and Conservation and Ecology groups.

Our current campaign is in the area of Fairtrade and Trade Justice. We hope that Bangor Diocese will gain the status of Fairtrade Diocese by Autumn 2004, and are urging and encouraging parishes to use Fairtrade products and to promote Fairtrade as part of this campaign. The five goals in this campaign can be found by following the link on the left.

The Division for Social Responsibility includes the Sector for Tourism, a group that co-ordinates workplace chaplaincy in the Diocese, the Action and Outreach Unit Co-ordinator for Mothers’ Union, and a group concerned with Rural Affairs.

We also support and encourage participation in and gaining expertise in all areas of social interaction, and are creating a network of people with particular expertise, e.g hospice ministry, housing estate ministry and other specific areas. The information and expertise gained will then be available to others in similar circumstances.

Speakers on all aspects of Christian Social Responsibility can be arranged for interested groups.
