Beaten copper panels sheath the altar, reredos & pulpit
Choir stalls with carved animals. An unusual church, built 1895 and consecrated 26th April 1898, as a bequest by the Rev'd. Charles Tooth, Chaplain and founder of St. Mark's Church in Florence. It is designed in the style of a north Italian country church by the architects John Sedding and Henry Wilson - the latter being a member of the Art Nouveau movement and was considered extremely avant garde. The reredos is a panel of beaten copper depicting a vine springing from a chalice, whilst at the sides are bluebells springing from the monogram I.H.S. The altar is sheathed in a beaten copper panel of the Annunciation and beaten copper with a motif of grapes also encases the pulpit. It is believed to be the only church in the British Isles to be so enriched with this work. Henry Wilson wished 'the church to appear as if it had sprung out of the soil, instead of being planted down on it.' The carved choir stalls depict a hare, tortoise, squirrels, rabbits, owl, mice, kingfisher and dolphin.
