'Royal Charter' Church.
This has been an ecclesiastical site for over 1300 years. The building dates from the 15th century, but was reconstructed in 1892.
An obelisk in the churchyard commemorates the victims of the 'Royal Charter' shipwreck in 1859. The Rev'd. Stephen Roose Hughes, with the help of his brother, toiled for weeks identifying the dead. Some of the dead are buried in the churchyard, their graves are to be found near to the main entrance of the church. On New Year's Eve 1859 Charles Dickens stayed at the Rectory whilst gathering information about the tragedy which is referred to in his book 'The Uncommercial Traveller.'
The mediaeval bell bears the inscription 'Ave Maria gracia plena' (Hail Mary full of grace).
