During the10th century there were numerous landings by the Danes in Anglesey and the church at Penmon was raided and burnt in the year 971. It is probable that it was after this event that a stone church was erected on a new site, (that of the present church) to replace the burnt out wooden one.

This was rebuilt between 1120 and 1170 and in 1237 Llywelyn the Great granted the monastery at Penmon to the Prior of Priestholm (Puffin Island).
