Many wanted to keep the small church of St. Tysilio on Church Island, but in 1850, the then Rector (Rev'd. T. Jones Williams) insisted that a new church be built on the mainland as a replacement in order to accommodate the increasing congregation. Costing £1,450, given by the Marquess of Anglesey, it was built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Menai Suspension Bridge. The architect was H. Kennedy of Bangor and was a simple Gothic style church with no adornments, stained glass or organ. The building was consecrated in 1858 and at a later date, an organ, stained glass and a high relief carved stone reredos depicting the Last Supper were added, some having been donated.
