The original church goes back to the 11th or 12th century with the chancel being rebuilt and lengthened in the late 15th century. Early in the 16th century the south chapel and arcade were added. The tower was built during the 17th century and a small pointed roof caps the tower. A Latin inscription can be seen on one of the arcade pillars.

A memorial to 'bonesetter' Evan Thomas (1745-1814) can be seen in the church. He was a naturally gifted healer and maker of splints for broken limbs - a tradition practised by his decendants. The rector, Rev'd. James Williams, and his wife, were during the early 19th century, founders of the Anglesey Lifesaving Association. He died in April 1872 having spent a lifetime helping the lifeboat service.
