Its churchyard is surrounded by walls of an ancient Roman fortress. St. Cybi, a Celtic missionary monk, established a monastery on the site in the 6th century. The present building dates mainly from the late mediaeval period with a tower built in the 17th century and a chapel added in the 19th. The church was heavily restored by Gilbert Scott in the 19th century.
Features of particular note include Morris & Co. windows, a small section of mediaeval wall painting, the leper's window, the carrara marble tomb of W. O. Stanley and a beautiful organ originally in Eaton Hall, Chester. The porch has some beautiful carvings, some of which are of mediaeval origin.
