Plaque commemorates those who lost their lives in the 1925 dam disaster.
The original mission church of corrugated metal was built in 1913 to cater for the increase in population after the building of the Aluminium works in the village in 1908. This church was swept away in the dam disaster of 1925, and services were then held in the old assembly hall (not the present one but an older building since demolished) until June 1926.
Then a former farm building was taken over as a temporary church. At one time, before it was used as a church, this building was used as a bowling alley. It remained in use until 1973 and, except for a part still in use as a church hall, it was demolished in 1976.
The present church was consecrated in October 1973. The processional cross, altar cross, lectern, communion plate and bell now used, are from the original church and were rescued after the dam disaster. The other fittings are modern including the altar of local limestone and a large aluminium cross above the altar.
