Esgob Llanelwy * Bishop of St Asaph

Bishop John

The Rt Revd John Stewart Davies was consecrated Bishop on 23 October 1999 and enthroned in St. Asaph Cathedral on 6 November 1999.

Born and brought up in the Diocese, Bishop John is a graduate of the University of Wales, Bangor, and Queens’ College, Cambridge. He trained for ministry at Westcott House, Cambridge. Ordained deacon in 1974 and priest in 1975, he served as Curate of Hawarden (1974-78), Vicar of Rhosymedre (1978-87) and Vicar of Mold (1987-92). He was also tutor at St. Deiniol's Library, Hawarden (1975-82), Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of St. Asaph (1982), Diocesan Warden of Ordinands & Secretary of the  Clerical Education Committee (1983) and Director of the Diocesan Ministerial Training Course (1983-93). He was an honorary Canon of St. Asaph Cathedral.

In 1991 Bishop John became Archdeacon of St. Asaph, and also Rector of Llandyrnog and Llangwyfan (1992-99), a position he held until his consecration.
Bishop John led the Diocese in a celebration of the Millennium in 2001, "Feeding the 5,000". At his second Visitation in 2004 he visited every Deanery in the Diocese and, through the preparation for these visits and the conversations that ensued, the six Diocesan Priorities were discerned:

  • Training - for clergy and lay people
  • Vocations and discipleship
  • Collaborative ministry
  • Building relationships - within our own church and community
  • Young people
  • Stewardship

2007 has been the year of Bishop John's third Visitation, which took the form of a series of pilgrimages across the Diocese.
