Pupils gather with Mrs Houston and Bishop Gregory

Madras School celebrates bicentenary

The Madras School in Penley has celebrated its 200th anniversary with a day of celebrations and two special concerts.

On Wednesday 9 November the school gathered for a special assembly where Bishop Gregory presented all the pupils and staff with a commemorative mug.

This was followed by a service of celebration at St Mary Magdalene Church in Penley to mark the occasion.

The service was attended by the current Lord Kenyon – a descendant of Lord Kenyon II who built the Madras School in 1811. Bishop Gregory preached at the service which was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wrexham.

The readings were taken from the 1611 King James Bible while the prayers were from the 1662 prayer book to reflect the style of worship that would have been observed by the school’s founders.

Pupils led the prayers in the school assembly

In his sermon, Bishop Gregory said:

“In celebrating 200 years of the Madras School in Penley, we remember a mission offered to the school and accepted by teachers for generations; to teach children those things which are good – a foundation of life lived to the full in the future.

“Today we pray for the next 200 years, even if the thatch may not last that long!”

Commenting on day of celebrations, Mrs Lynda Houston, Headteacher at the Madras School said:

“It’s such a privilege to be the Headteacher of the school anyway, but to be the head at this time has been fantastic.

“I think the children and the staff have worked so hard and with such enjoyment to make sure that everything has been such a success. I’m very, very proud.”

The school also held two concerts on Thursday 10 November and Friday 11 November to mark their bicentenary.
