Revd Nigel Williams outside St Asaph Cathedral

New Dean for St Asaph Cathedral

A new chapter will unfold in the life of St Asaph Cathedral on Saturday 17 September as Revd Nigel Williams takes over as Dean.

The former Vicar of Colwyn Bay with Bryn y Maen will be installed as Dean by Bishop Gregory in a service at the Cathedral at 2pm.

A fluent Welsh speaker, Nigel was born in St Asaph and brought up in Llansannan before training for the priesthood at St Michael’s College, Llandaff and the University of Wales, Cardiff.

He was ordained in St Asaph Cathedral in the mid 1990s and prior to his ministry in Colwyn Bay has served in the parishes of Denbigh & Nantglyn, and Llanrwst and Llanddoged. Between 2004 and 2009 he served as Area Dean of Rhos.

Nigel is delighted to be taking on this new role and said:

“To serve the diocese as Dean is a great privilege.

“I am looking forward to being a part of the community that makes the Cathedral a living place of prayer and worship.”

Before his ordination Nigel’s childhood passion for farming took him to Llysfasi Agricultural College and he later became a depot manager for Wynnstay Farmers in Llanrwst.

He is married to Nia, who is Vicar of Glan Ogwen, Mynydd Llandegai and Pentir and they have two daughters, Catrin, who is about to complete her A level studies and Dwynwen, who will take her GCSE’s next year.

Bishop Gregory used his Ad Clerum to announce Nigel’s appointment to the role of Dean and said:

“Nigel is, in my view, the right person to carry forward ministry in St Asaph Cathedral, and I am delighted that he will be assuming this role in the Cathedral and the life of the diocese in the autumn.

“He is a child of the diocese, and has shown great flair in his ministry in Colwyn Bay – flair which will be put to excellent use in the Cathedral.”
