Motorbikes arrive in SWT
14 motorbikes and 30 bicycles have now been delivered to clergy in South West Tanganyika.
Our Diocesan Offering Service in 2011 raised cash to provide transport for Priests and Catechists in our linked Diocese who currently have to walk many miles to carry out their pastoral ministry.
A ceremony to hand over the transportation was held on Thursday 5 January.
Bishop John Simalenga said:
“The priests were jubilant and the day was like a great dream come true!
“They all gave thanks to God for your great gifts because it means a great easing of travel as they minister for the Lord in these difficult conditions.
“On behalf of all the clergy and all Diocesan church members, please accept our very humble gratitude to all who have made this transport project a reality”
Canon John and Sister
Aneth's trip to St Asaph
As part of their two-week trip to the Diocese of St Asaph, Canon John Kwetu and Sister Aneth from our linked Diocese of South West Tanganyika called in to see the Deeside College Chaplaincy.
The Chaplaincy Team was set up in May and offers students and staff at the college the chance to meet with members of the team to talk about matters of life and faith.
During the visit, Sister Aneth and Canon John met with Deeside College Principal, David Jones and Vice Principal, Helen Wright before enjoying a tour of the college site.
A special stop was made at Deeside as part of the visit to north Wales to highlight the unique new link between the College and the Diocese.
Reverend Martin Batchelor from the Diocese of St Asaph heads up the Chaplaincy Team at Deeside College and said:
“This was an opportunity for Canon John and Sister Aneth to see an educational institution in a very different context and enabled them to see what’s possible.
“They met a group of students who were interested in learning about South West Tanganyika and the visit helped to strengthen relationships between young people in different continents – they were able to share their experiences and discover common values.”
Canon John and Sister Aneth have enjoyed visits to the north and south of the Diocese and also took part in the Diocesan Offering Service on Monday 10 October as all the money raised this year will go to our linked Diocese.

Offerings
The Diocese's Lent Appeal for 2011 and this year's Diocesan Offering will try and raise enough money to buy 40 motorbikes and 40 bicycles for our new link with South West Tanganyika in the African country of Tanzania.
Each motorbike costs £800 while a push-bike costs £100. This will mean priests and nuns will be able so save time and energy as each round trip at the moment is a 30 kilometre walk.
What is this link all about?
Bishop Stephen Lowe is chairing the South West Tanganyika Association and is really keen to see links forged between our two dioceses. It's not all about raising money though.
Bishop Stephen said:
"This new link between the dioceses of St Asaph and South West Tanganyika is an important opportunity for our diocese. As part of the Partners in Mission programme for the Anglican Communion, the relationship gives us a chance to learn from our membership of the worldwide church.
"It gives us a chance to make new friends, to explore the life of a diocese that is full of energy, life and growth yet is economically very poor and where the struggle of daily living is harsh and unremitting.
"This link can make a difference – to us in our understanding of the Christian gospel and the vitality of our faith and to those in Tanzania whom we can support in their efforts to grow economically and spiritually."
How can you get involved?
All of our parishes have been sent a special pack about the link with South West Tanganyika. It includes a DVD and some fundraising ideas, as well as some information about South West Tanganyika and some Tanzanian recipes.

Bind us we pray, so that the fellowship between South West Tanganyika and St Asaph may grow and that we may enrich one another and continually glorify You in all ways. Amen.
