Funding For Churches

  • Is it building maintenance / repair / alteration or re-ordering?
    • If building maintenance the parish would be expected to fund the work.
    • Parishes wishing to re-order should contact Tracey White at the Diocesan Office.
    • If repair then the following procedure should be followed:

Is it a listed building?

If yes, then need to check whether repairs are marked as urgent in the last quinqennial (which needs to be no more than 2 years old).  If not, the architect needs to produce an interim report stating repairs are now urgent.

Listed Places Of Worship Scheme refunds VAT on eligible works to listed churches. Visit their website for details of what is eligible and how to apply.

CADW should be first point of call for large repairs which must cost over £5,000. All funders will ask whether you have applied to them. They make awards annually in March. You can contact CADW as follows:

If the repairs are to stop water ingress, you can apply to Heritage Lottery Fund – Places of Worship Grant Scheme. Follow the link or phone 029 2034 3413 for an information pack.

The Diocese has a grants scheme which can award either £1,000, £2,000 or £3,000 for the repair or refurbishment of a church building. The application form is available from Tracey White at the Diocesan Office. This fund can also be used for heating and lighting schemes.

The Representative Body has a grant scheme administered by the Churches Sub-Committee. It awards grants up to £9,000. Contact Paul Rees, Churches Officer on 029 2034 8200 for an application form. Paul also has application forms for a boundary wall grant scheme.

The Welsh Church Fund has money to give away each for repair of church buildings and other good causes.  Each unitary authority has its own fund.  Contact Tracey White at the Diocesan Office for details of how to apply.

Allchurches Trust gets its money from the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group and is very flexible about giving to church building repairs.  Application forms are available from www.ecclesiastical.co.uk

There are several private trusts that may give money for the repair of churches. Contact Tracey White at the Diocesan Office for a pack.
