St Michael’s College

Local training
for a variety of lay and ordained ministries in St Asaph

Welcome!

St Michael’s College Llandaff train people for different public ministries here in the Diocese of St Asaph.

Who is the course for?

At the moment we are training candidates for ordained (priestly and diaconal) ministry and licensed Reader ministry.  We are also involved in the delivery of the course for evangelists. Those who are interested in learning more about their faith, but are not training for a particular ministry, are also welcome to attend the course.  Please contact Manon Parry for more details.

When is the course taught?

Modules are taught on some Wednesday evenings at the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) in Wrexham and some weekends at different venues (usually St Deiniol's Library in Hawarden or the University of Wales Centre at Gregynog).  An annual post Easter school is held in Cardiff.

On Wednesdays we meet from 5.30 p.m. for a meal and worship. The classes start at 6.15 p.m.

What kinds of modules are taught?

Class based modules include Practical Theology, The Bible, Spirituality and the Story of Christianity.  Those training for ordained and Reader ministries gain practical experience through placement and also attend training on skills needed for their ministry - leading worship and preaching; for Readers, skills in adult education; and for ordinands, skills in mission and pastoral care.

I am interested in becoming ordained / a Reader…. What do I do next?

Each ministry has its own selection process.  You will need the support of your parish priest and to be recommended for training by the relevant committee or board.  To find out more, please contact Revd Canon Raymond Bayley 01824 702068 (Warden of Readers) or Revd James Harris 01352 740111 (Warden of Ordinands).

What qualification will I get?

The course lasts generally for two years for Reader candidates, and three years for ordinands.  Readers will receive a Certificate in Practical Theology and ordinands a Diploma in Practical Theology from Cardiff University.

Will I receive support?

All ministry candidates have their own personal tutor who will help them reflect on their experience of training and on their spiritual, emotional and academic development.  The diocese also has a network of spiritual directors who are available for confidential discussions.  The course director and tutor are also more than happy to discuss with you any issues that arise.  The Wardens of Readers and Ordinands also provide pastoral support during training, and advice during the selection process.  We also provide help with study skills and any other needs as they arise.

I am interested in finding out more about the course - what do I do?

Please contact the St Asaph tutor, Manon Parry, on manon.parry@sky.com or 01492 516728 for an informal conversation about any aspect of the course.  Up to date information can also be found on the St Michael's website http://www.stmichaels.ac.uk/
