St Michael's College Cardiff

St Michael's College, Cardiff

Refreshed, renewed and raring to go

An extensive £1 million refurbishment has improved accommodation and facilities at St Michael’s.

All the bedrooms have been upgraded and are now en-suite; disabled access is vastly improved; the entrance hall and reception are bright and welcoming; and the conference rooms now more than meet the needs of the 21st century.

The refurbishment has equipped St Michael’s with first class facilities for those outside the college to use for retreats, conferences, workshops and meetings. We encourage you to utilize the college facilities, our beautiful college chapel is a delight, our catering excellent and the staff are here to assist you. We look forward to welcoming you to the College.

Local training for a variety of lay and ordained ministries in St Asaph

Welcome!

St Michael’s College, Llandaff train people for different public ministries here in the Diocese of St Asaph.

Who is the course for?

At the moment we are training candidates for ordained (priestly and diaconal) ministry and licensed Reader ministry.  We are also involved in the delivery of the course for evangelists. Those who are interested in learning more about their faith, but are not training for a particular ministry, are also welcome to attend the course.  Please contact Manon Ceridwen Parry for more details.

When and where is the course taught?

Modules are taught on Wednesday evenings during term time at Glyndwr University (formerly NEWI) in Wrexham and some weekends at different venues (usually Gladstone’s Library in Hawarden).  Evening sessions start at 6.30 p.m. and finish at 8.30pm, and we meet (if we can) from 5.30 p.m. for a meal and worship.

The induction weekend as well as an annual core skills weekend and the summer school are held at St Michael’s College.

What kinds of modules are taught?

Class based modules include Practical Theology, The Bible, Spirituality and the Story of Christianity.  Those training for ordained and Reader ministries gain practical experience through placement and also attend training on skills needed for their ministry - leading worship and preaching; for Readers, skills in adult education; and for ordinands, skills in mission and pastoral care.

I am interested in becoming ordained / a Reader…. What do I do next?

Each ministry has its own selection process.  You will need the support of your parish priest and to be recommended for training by the relevant committee or board.  To find out more, please contact the Warden of Readers or the Diocesan Director of Ordinands (Contact details).

What qualification will I get?

The course lasts generally for two years for Reader candidates, and three years for ordinands.  Readers will receive a Certificate in Practical Theology and ordinands a Diploma in Practical Theology from Cardiff University.

Will I receive support?

All ministry candidates have their own personal tutor who will help them reflect on their experience of training and on their spiritual, emotional and academic development.  The diocese also has a network of spiritual directors who are available for confidential discussions.  The course director and tutor are also more than happy to discuss with you any issues that arise.  The Wardens of Readers and Ordinands also provide pastoral support during training, and advice during the selection process.  We also provide help with study skills and any other needs as they arise.

I am interested in finding out more about the course - what do I do?

Please contact the St Asaph tutor, Manon Parry, on manon.parry@sky.com or 01492 516728 for an informal conversation about any aspect of the course.  Up to date information can also be found on the St Michael's websitehttp://www.stmichaels.ac.uk/
